Completed Lean Six Sigma Projects for Erie County:

  

Parks Management of Equipment and Repairs

This project will reduce equipment repair costs by $95,000 on an annual basis.  MORE

 

Office of Child Support Enforcement Case Backlog

This project reduced a child support enforcement case backlog from 7,281 to 103 cases in less than one year.  MORE

 

Family Planning Benefit Program Enrollment - Health

This project increased the County's reimbursement for Family Planning Benefits.  MORE

 

Management of Erie County Equipment Repairs - DPW

This project focused on maximizing in-house equipment repairs to reduce costs.  MORE

 

Erie County Parks Department

Shelter reservations are easier to make in Erie County Parks as a result of this project.  MORE

 

Erie County DPW Buildings & Grounds Overtime Review

Overtime costs in the Public Works Department were reduced as a result of this project.  MORE

  

Interdepartmental Children System of Care - Mental Health

 This project spanned several County departments and sought to reduce the number of children placed in residential treatment centers.  MORE

 

Managing CPL 730 Bed Day Use - Mental Health

This project focused on reducing the number of days criminal defendants spend in psychiatric care.  MORE

 

Streamlining Application Workflow - Social Services

This project sought to reduce overtime in the Department of Social Services.  MORE

 

 Early Intervention Program-Health

This project focused on improving delivery of early special needs intervention services.  MORE

 

High Speed Copiers/Printer Cost Reduction

This project successfully reduced printing and copying costs for Erie County.  MORE

 

Rath Building Paper Recycling

This environmentally beneficial project also increased paper recycling revenue for the County.  MORE

 

Streamlining Hiring-Social Services

This project reduced the amount of time it takes the Department of Social Services to fill vacancies.  MORE

 

  

Lean Six Sigma Projects Underway in Erie County:

 

Delinquent Real Property-Real Property

The project will improve the collection rate and dollars for delinquent taxes and related charges owed to Erie County.

Departmental Purchase Orders (DPOs)-Purchasing

Reduce use of DPOs, shift spending for services, products, and shipping to leverage the County’s purchasing power. 

911 Public Safety Answering Points-Central Police Services

The project objective is to reduce future costs of equipment and operations while preserving the safety of Erie County residents.

Workers Compensation/Delinquent Real Property-County Attorney, Real Property

The project focus is to reengineer existing processes, ensure timely filing of all required documentation, and timely resolution of open claims.

Child Protective Services-Social Services

Streamline the processes to investigate calls dealing with abuse and/or neglect, arrange for services for families, and ensure the safety of Erie County children.

Length of Stay for Homeless-Social Services

Focus is to reengineer the process and engagement of the provider community to reduce lengths of stay for emergency shelter placement and accelerate permanent housing arrangements.

Direct Data Entry/3209 Waiver-Social Services

The project will review case processing to reduce; cycle time, error rates, and duplication of work by shifting data entry from Data Entry Operators to Caseworkers.

Day Care-Social Services

The project will examine opportunities to reduce the number of over grants (overpayments) to individuals receiving day care services.

Re-entry Initiative-Mental Health

The project will decrease the cycle time for a parolee to be restored back in the community.

Coordinated Jail Services-Health, Mental Health, Social Services, Sheriff

The project will review Re-arrest/Recidivism rates in the Erie County Holding Center and the Erie County Correctional Facility by improving the links for seriously mentally ill incarcerated individuals to community diversion services and Specialty Courts.

Help Desk-Department of Information & Support Services

Reduce the cycle time to complete a help desk ticket to end user satisfaction.

Complaint Calls Response Efficiency-Sewerage Management

The project will review the number and types of complaint calls and reduce the number of calls, shorten cycle times, and lower costs.

Release Under Supervision-Central Police Services, Probation, Sheriff

Identify opportunities to increase the number of referrals (for low risk offenders) from Judges for Release Under Supervision.  This will help reduce jail overcrowding, congestion, traffic, and costs.

Holding Center-Sheriff

Identify opportunities to more efficiently process and move offenders (people and associated paperwork) to and from City Court.
